In her most recent book after the wildly successful “The Nightingale”, Kristin Hannah has wrought a compelling story told through the eyes of a young thirteen year old girl, wise beyond her years.
Set in post-Vietnam America, Ernt Allbright returns home from the war as a former POW. He is a changed man: he has become volatile and angry at the government. When he decides to move his family to Alaska to live off the grid, his wife and young daughter have serious misgivings. Despite this, they settle in and find a strong, generous community who helps them prepare for the coming winter.
When winter arrives, darkness descends and the family becomes isolated and dependent on each other. Ernt’s fragile mental state deteriorates and the family fractures. It’s up to thirteen year old Leni to make some extremely tough decisions.
The strong characters and harsh, beautiful landscape make this a must-read.
