Stay Current with Library News

March 7, 2022

The Library is back to regular hours: Monday – Thursday 10am-9pm, Friday 10am-6pm, Saturday 10am-5pm, and Sunday 1pm-5pm, and to full capacity limits for visitors.

Masking and physical distancing are no longer mandatory, but both are recommended while in the library.  We encourage everyone to use hand sanitizer, and please stay home if you are not feeling well.

Curbside pickup for requested items and program packages is available upon request by calling the library, 780-998-4275, during regular hours.

The Library’s outside return slot, by the north doors of City Hall, is open 24/7.  The return bin in the entry of the Dow Centennial Centre is open the same hours as the DCC. Materials returned to the bin at the DCC will be picked up and checked in on Wednesdays. And remember, FSPL is fine free forever! We no longer charge overdue fees for late items.

We welcome everyone back into the library as we slowly ease up on restrictions. Safety matters as we reconnect with the community.


September 30, 2021

To honor National Truth and Reconciliation Day, the Library held a smudging ceremony performed by Ellie Lagrandeur.  Here are some photos of this memorable event.


September 18, 2021

Effective September 20, the Library will operate at a 1/3 fire code building capacity, require masks and two meter physical distancing by attendees. Attendees must also be with household members only, or 2 close contacts if they live alone. This is in accordance with the Province’s new public health restrictions announced on September 15.  For more information visit  https://www.alberta.ca/covid-19-public-health-actions.aspx .

Curbside pickup of items and program packages is available Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

Effective September 4, masks are mandatory in the library building. This is in accordance with the Province’s temporary measures/restrictions to reduce the transmission of Covid-19.

The Library is open with full capacity and limited services.  Our modified hours continue with the Library open Monday – Friday 10 am – 6 pm, Saturday 1-5 pm and closed on Sundays.  We encourage everyone to continue to sanitize their hands prior to entry, wear a mask and maintain a two meter distance while in the Library.

We are dedicating the month of February to raise awareness of the importance of physical literacy by offering a variety of fun activities and programs to motivate everyone to stay fit and be active. Pick up a Physical Literacy Passport from the Library using curbside pickup or download it here and complete five physical activities. All completed passports will have entry to win some cool prizes. December 3, 2020

Our Curbside Pickup Service is back and is available Thursdays and Fridays between 10:30 am and 5:30 pm.   You can drive up to the North doors of City Hall (by the library’s outside return slot), and give us a call at 780-998-4275.  Please have your library card number with you.  Staff will retrieve your requested items, check them out, and bring them to the cart at the top of the steps for contactless pickup. Please maintain physical distancing when picking up your items. Place your items on hold using the online catalogue through the website fspl.ca.  If you would like us to pick out some items for you, please call earlier in the week with your request.

November 24, 2020

The province announced new safety measures.  The Library remains open with limited capacity, modified hours and services.  It is mandatory to wear a mask while in the Library.  For everyone’s safety, please let our staff know if you are exempt and they will provide you with alternative services.  For more information visit https://www.alberta.ca/enhanced-public-health-measures.aspx  .

Just a reminder that library items can be returned on Tuesdays beginning at 9:00am for a 24 hour period to our outside return chute only. Items can also be returned on Saturdays at the Dow Centennial Centre on Saturdays during their open hours (6:30am to 8:00pm).

Tuesday September 29, 2020:

Storywalks – A New Family Program!

Every month we’ll have an interactive Storywalk set up in the library for you to enjoy. Follow the signs and read the pages of the book as you browse the library and stretch your legs. Keep your eyes peeled for some take-out activities at the end of the story. One local family had fun reading September’s book, “If You Give a Moose a Muffin” by Laura Numeroff.


Tuesday September 29, 2020:

Fine Free Forever!

The Fort Saskatchewan Public Library has eliminated all late fees for library materials effective immediately. All existing late fees are forgiven with the exception of lost/damaged materials.

 


Tuesday September 15, 2020:

With recent developments in research on the length of time the virus stay viable on stacked library material, we will be quarantining library items for at least 7 days before checking items in off patron accounts and shelving items. Items returned on Tuesday will be checked in the following Wednesday. Items returned to the DCC on Saturday will be checked in a week from the following Monday. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

 


Thursday September 3, 2020:

The library is excited to bring you new fall programs! They will be modified as we adhere to health and safety measures, but they will be just as wonderful and engaging as ever! To find out what we have planned, check out the What’s On Fall 2020 edition.

In another piece of good news, we are happy to let you know we have added a second day for you to return your library items. Every Saturday beginning on September 12, you will be able to return your library items to our bin located at the Dow Centennial Centre during their open hours. Items will be quarantined for a 96 hour period before being checked in. If you have any questions, please call the library at 780-998-4275.

 

 

Wednesday August 12, 2020:

The library is excited to have you back in the library. Please ensure you familiarize yourself with the procedures (linked in the July 13 update), and please see our modified hours before planning your visit. Please remember to bring and wear a mask when visiting the library. If you do not have a mask, the library will provide you with a disposable mask for your visit.

There has been new evidence to show that items should be quarantined for a minimum of 96 hours to ensure that COVID is not transmittable. In light of these recent findings, the library will now be quarantining items for a minimum of 96 hours. Returns will continue to be accepted on Tuesdays for a 24 hour period. Please do not bring library materials for return outside of this time period, and please use the outside return bin only.

Monday, July 13, 2020:

The library will be reopening with modifications to hours and service on Monday, July 20, 2020.

Library Hours will be:

  • Monday to Friday: 10am to 6:00pm
  • Saturday: 1pm to 5:00pm
  • Sunday: Closed

Services available include:

  • Public computers. The number of computers is limited and requires a booking by phone or in person. Time will be limited to 30 minutes. Please wear a mask. One-on-one computer support will not be offered. Computers will be cleaned between each use.
  • Pick up and check out of requested materials. If you place a hold on an item, please wait for notification from us that your item is available for pickup before coming in.
  • Browsing the collection, limited to 30 minutes.
  • Check out of library materials; please use the self-checkout machines if you are able to.
  • Use of the photocopier.
  • Returning material will remain limited to Tuesdays only through the outside return slot to allow us to safely quarantine the items for 72 hours.

Wednesday July 8, 2020:

Due to the overwhelming response to the Curbside Holds Pickup Service, we will be temporarily suspending the ability to place any new requests through our catalogue for a short time between Thursday, July 9 and Thursday, July 16.

We will continue to fill current holds, and schedule Curbside Pickups during this time.

Wednesday June 10, 2020:

The Government of Alberta has announced that Stage 2 of the Relaunch Strategy will commence on Friday, June 12. Several services, including libraries, are included in this stage.

At this time, the library does not have any concrete dates for when we will be able to reopen our doors to the public. We continue to work on implementing the proper safety measures and need to ensure we have these in place before we open, to protect both the community and our staff.

We will continue to offer our new Holds Curbside Pickup service, and will be accepting returns beginning on Tuesday June 16 with restrictions. Our online resources continue to improve with new content added weekly, and we also have a fantastic virtual summer reading challenge ready to launch July 1st – stay tuned for more details!

The library will be closed on Monday May 18, 2020 for Victoria Day. Please feel free to call or email and library staff will get back to you as soon as possible!

To address questions as to when we will reopen: As of right now there is no plan for us to open in the immediate future. We are in phase 2 of the official relaunch strategy, but no dates have yet to be determined. We know you miss us – we miss you too!

We will continue to offer our “Used Book Curbside Pickup” service until June 5, so please fill out the form and get some fantastic used books to tide you over until we reopen. We are working on some exciting new services that we look forward to launching soon so stay tuned for details!

Tuesday April 28, 2020:

The library remains closed, but we are working hard on creating weekly virtual programs. The bookdrop remains closed as well, so please continue holding onto library materials.

Due to the pandemic, we have had to make the decision to cancel the Writer in Residence for 2020 at the Fort Saskatchewan Public Library. However, Strathcona County Library and St. Albert Public Library have stepped in and are working with Conni Massing during the months of May and June. Any Fort Saskatchewan resident can still take advantage of these services through these locations. Conni can be contacted directly at regionalwir@gmail.com and more information can be found on the Metro Writer in Residence Facebook page.
